BACKGROUND
This old abandoned hospital in the middle of Ironton has long been rumored to be haunted. One of our members had spent some time at the property many years ago and had reported two eerie experiences late at night on the property. On one occasion she felt an unseen presence grab her arm. On another occasion she made eye contact with an acquaintance as she ascended the stairs and he descended them. However, when she reached the top floor she discovered that the person she had just passed on the stairwell was still there. Just a short time had elapsed and there was no other stairwell for him to use to return to the top floor without her seeing him. He insisted that he had not passed her on the stairwell, but had been on the top floor the entire time.

Based on our member's personal experience, we were very interested in investigating this old hospital. The owner seemed very open to have us check the property out. We also contacted the local Police to inform them of who we were and that we were planning on spending several hours at the property after dark. The hospital is in a small town and we suspected that strangers camping out in an abandoned hospital in the middle of town would likely (and did) attract a lot of attention. I was informed by the person answering the phone at the police chief’s office that I didn’t want to go in there as the place was haunted. I wasn’t prepared to have the local constabulary admit to having a haunted location, but their admission to this encouraged me greatly. To say I was intrigued would be an understatement.
Six of us arrived at the site early to assess the property in daylight hours and to devise a strategy for the evening. We entered the building and set up a base of operation in one of the upper rooms at the top of the stairs. We made sweeps of the building, going in teams to measure the temperature and EMF levels. We started at the top of the building and worked our way to the ground floor. There was no power to the building that we could measure and little sign that anyone had been doing much in the building. However, we did find a recently added fire suppression system installed.
The building has been abandoned for many years and has been abused by people and animals. In one wall we did discover a very large bee infestation. The bees were limited to access from the outside of the building but we still stayed out of the room. Many of the rooms are falling apart from the inside out, and the basement is choked with boxes of discarded clothing. For safety reasons we opted out of investigating the basement.
We made sweeps of the top three floors every 45 minutes to an hour, looking for anomalies measurable by thermometer, EMF Meter, and Tri-field Meter. We also took hundreds of photos and several hours of video. We set up two audio recorders, leaving them in static locations. We also used the audio recorders to conduct interviews in various rooms throughout the building. With over 50 rooms to choose from we had to leave some rooms uninvestigated. We must have chosen poorly as we were unable to capture any activity on any of the devices we used. Beyond feeling a little uncomfortable in the unusual setting, no one in the group experienced anything that would be considered paranormal.
We did capture two photo's that are unusual and possibly paranormal in nature. Several photos were taken of the elevator door on the top floor throughout the evening. Two photo's taken some time apart revealed an image of a face in the elevator window that is very striking. Other photo's taken of the same area did not produce this effect.
We recognize that the short period of time we spent on this remarkable property is only a snapshot of the activity that may be going on there. We hope to return at a later time to repeat our investigation so that we can prove or disprove the unusual photo's of the elevator.
